Medicare Supplement Plan N is third most popular among Medicare Supplement plans. Only Plan F and Plan G have more enrollees than Plan N. Plan N is unique because it has a copay of $20 for doctor visits and $50 for hospital emergency room visits. Plan N entered the market in June of 2010, along with Plan M. It covers all of the Part A Deductible and does not cover the Part B Deductible

Medicare Supplement Plan N is one of the fastest growing Medigap plans, only behind Plan G. It’s expected to grow in popularity because Plan F won’t be available to new Medicare eligibles. According to AHIP, in 2017, 10% of of people enrolled in Medigap plans, had chosen Plan N.

Part A Hospital Coinsurance

  • Days 61-90 of a hospital stay in each Medicare benefit period.
  • Days 91-150 of a hospital stay. Medicare will only pay for these 60 days once during your lifetime.

Additional Part A Hospital Benefits

  • An extra 365 days of inpatient hospital care after you use your Original Medicare hospital benefits.

Part B Coinsurance

  • Pays for the Part B coinsurance after you meet your annual deductible.
  • 100% except up to $20 co-pay for office visits and $50 co-pay for ER visits

Part A and B Blood Coverage

  • Pays for the first three pints of blood per calendar year.

Part A Hospice Coinsurance

  • Pays for outpatient prescriptions drug and inpatient respite care coinsurance.

Part A Deductible

  • In 2020, the Medicare Part A Deductible is $1,408. Medigap Plan N covers the deductible amount.

Skilled Nursing Facilities

  • In 2020, the co-payment for skilled nursing is $176/day for days 21-100. Medigap Plan N covers the co-payment amount.

Foreign Travel Emergency

  • Plan N pays only for emergency care
  • Pays only after you first meet and pay a $250 deductible.
  • Pays 80% of billed charges for Medicare eligible expenses for medically necessary hospital, physician, and medical care received in a foreign country. You would be responsible for the other 20%.
  • Has a $50,000 lifetime maximum benefit.

  • Pennsylvania had 98,734 people enrolled in Plan N. Medigap Plans C, F and G had more enrollees than Plan N.
  • Florida had 80,902 enrollees in Plan N. Only Plan F had more enrollees than Plan N.
  • Michigan had 68,591 people enrolled in Plan N. Plans C, F and G had more enrollees than Plan N.
  • California had 65,187 enrollees in Plan N. Plan F was the only plan with more enrollees than Plan N.
  • Illinois had 54,163 enrolled in Plan N. Only Plans F and G had more enrollees than Plan N.
  • Indiana had 43,545 enrollees in Plan N. Medigap Plans F and G had more enrollees than Plan N.
