Medicare Supplement Plan M

Medicare Supplement Plan M and Plan N were introduced in June of 2010. Plan M covers half of the Part A Deductible and does not cover the Part B Deductible. According to AHIP, in 2018 Medigap Plans K, L and also M accounted for 1% of all Medicare Supplement Plans sold. For example, Medicare Supplement Plan M had fewer enrollees than any Medigap plan.
Part A Hospital Coinsurance
- Days 61-90 of a hospital stay in each Medicare benefit period.
- Days 91-150 of a hospital stay. Medicare will only pay for these 60 days once during your lifetime.
Additional Part A Hospital Benefits
- An extra 365 days of inpatient hospital care after you use your Original Medicare hospital benefits. In other words,
Part B Coinsurance
- Pays for the Part B coinsurance after you meet your annual deductible.
Part A and B Blood Coverage
- Pays for the first three pints of blood per calendar year.
Part A Hospice Coinsurance
- Pays for outpatient prescriptions drug and inpatient respite care coinsurance.
Part A Deductible
- In 2020, the Medicare Part A Deductible is $1,408. Medigap Plan M covers 50% of the Part A deductible.
Skilled Nursing Facilities
- In 2020, the co-payment for skilled nursing is $176/day for days 21-100. Medigap Plan M covers the co-payment amount.
Foreign Travel Emergency
- Plan M pays only for emergency care
- Pays only after you first meet and pay a $250 deductible.
- Pays 80% of billed charges for Medicare eligible expenses for medically necessary hospital, physician, and medical care received in a foreign country. You would be responsible for the other 20%.
- Has a $50,000 lifetime maximum benefit.

- Massachussetts had 3,031 enrollees in Plan M. Plan M had more enrolles than the other Medigap plan.
- Minnesota had 511 enrollees in Plan M. Plans A, C, D, G, K and also L had fewer enrollees.
- New Hampshire had 192 enrollees in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- Florida had 120 people enrolled in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- Maine had 96 enrollees in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- North Carolina had 83 enrollees in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- Tennessee had 55 people enrolled in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- Texas had 33 people enrolled in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- Maryland had 30 enrollees in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- California had 25 enrollees in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- Ohio had 25 people who were in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
- Indiana had 23 enrollees in Plan M. All other Medigap plans had more enrolles than Plan M.
